But I will say that if you order toast at some places, they not only give you *really* thick slices, but if they have a wood-fired oven, they'll also toast it for you in there. It's really amazing and worth every penny, although clearly not an everyday treat.

I hope your bread hunger has been sated. And, by the way, I was thinking of you recently when I found and purchased an old Hungarian cookbook; it's beautiful to look at. Plus, I'm excited about all the things I'm going to try! Bring on the paprika. :)Katyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04290135991797809997noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4031121890854604877.post-60664314518943352342014-02-19T14:28:01.905-08:002014-02-19T14:28:01.905-08:00Hi Moriah! I did think of you when I was writing this since I know you dislike walnuts most of the time...I wondered if this bread would change your mind or if you were a fan of savory walnut breads. And I do highly recommend walnut oil; I love using it in salad dressing with creme fraiche and shallots. It always feels like a special treat!

And I'm glad to know I'm not alone in my mountain cabin fantasy. Maybe Heavenly can be heavenly; it just wasn't this time around. That being said, I don't think anybody in the Bay Area who stepped outside that weekend could have anything but unpleasant memories. It was just nasty all around!

I hope you make this and, if you do, please let me know how it turns out! I think the milk jam would make a great accompaniment, although that may be too many kitchen projects for one weekend--especially if the sun keeps shining like today.

Katyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04290135991797809997noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4031121890854604877.post-61467094048039282162014-02-19T14:22:51.276-08:002014-02-19T14:22:51.276-08:00I think you should take the plunge, Lisa! It's...I think you should take the plunge, Lisa! It's surprisingly easy and really fun; it's also great to wake up and to know that you have home-baked bread waiting for you (I'm a toast lover, so this makes me really happy). And thank you; I'm glad you like the photos; the colors of the dish were really vibrant and inviting!Katyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04290135991797809997noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4031121890854604877.post-89735018262216241192014-02-17T09:41:49.974-08:002014-02-17T09:41:49.974-08:00This is fun to read after the NPR story I heard ab...This is fun to read after the NPR story I heard about $4 toast in the Bay Area this morning. Now I'm hungry for bread:). Your honesty about the snow cabin fantasy made me giggle as I related to it so, and I have to say, the coldness of "Heavenly" sounds... well... kind of hellish, or at least very cringing-ly uncomfortable. Still, the warm bread you made is the perfect antidote: one that I am even tempted to make myself -- walnuts, waiting time, and all. I can't blame adorable Elektra for being nosy.
And, wow! The jams on top! I'm loving this interplay between the blogs, and craving toast more than ever...
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4031121890854604877.post-17099798529208622792014-02-15T20:25:01.862-08:002014-02-15T20:25:01.862-08:00I have yet to try making my own bread, but I'v...I have yet to try making my own bread, but I've been reading about it and collecting recipes for a while. I think I'm going to give it a try. Your photo of the lovely jam and preserves and rose petals is just...lovely. Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
